A look at historical prices would show that the largest moves in gold occur when the value of the dollar is falling. If you look at the period between 2002 and 2008 – roughly speaking – you would see that the price of gold exploded from around $300/ounce to over $1,200/ounce and actually peaked at around $1,900 before crashing. During the same period, the value of the dollar in world markets, as measured or indicated by DXY, the symbol for the Dollar Index, which compares the value of the US dollar to a basket of six other world currencies, fell 45%. Not coincidentally, the price of crude oil quadrupled when the price of gold quadrupled. Most of these moves were in reaction to the falling dollar. If you compare the price of gold or crude oil to their price in their country’s currency or their country of origin, you would find that their price hasn’t changed all that much; any price changes in local currencies were probably due to speculation. If you go back to the Reagan era, another time of rising gold prices, you would see almost the same thing, the rapid and significant fall in the value of the US dollar that caused the price of gold to rise significantly, peaking at around $800/oz or so.
